The difference between hemp and "marijuana"...

You may have some questions around the difference between hemp and cannabis, so we broke it down for you below!

Hemp is differentiated from the other species of cannabis by the psychoactive ingredient in the plant, Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Hemp contains the lowest concentration of THC out of any of the 3 cannabis species which include Cannabis Indica, Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Ruderalis. Hemp is a low THC-variant of the Cannabis Sativa L. variety compared to it’s siblings who are often associated with medicinal or recreational drug use.

Hemp is a plant celebrated for it’s many uses in different industries. The same hemp plant can produce fibre to make clothing, ropes or textiles, as well as produce seed oil for holistic health, foods and supplements.

Industrial Hemp

The Hemp clothing industry is popular and only growing as more people look to make eco-friendly choices in how they source their clothes. Hemp is one of the fastest growing crops in the world reaching their harvest point in 4-12 weeks, compared to cotton’s 21-25 week harvest. It also requires much less water than cotton which is one of the thirstiest crops, reducing our impact on fresh water supply and desertification. Furthermore, hemp is a carbon-negative plant, meaning it will absorb more CO2 than it creates during its crop cycle. Hemp fibre is also much more durable than cotton, meaning it won’t stretch, will last longer and absorb more moisture.

Hemp Nutrition

Australian standards mean Hemp Foods can only be made from the seeds of the plant. These seeds are hulled, pressed, broken down and ground to make powders, supplements, oils, or hulled seeds. These nutritional benefits include:

  • High levels of protein

  • Natural fats

  • Omega 3, 6 & 9

  • High fibre and calcium

  • Vitamins A, B, C, D & E

Hemp can be used for constipation, high cholesterol, eczema, arthritis, and many other conditions, however there is no scientific evidence to support hemp’s use in medicine.

Hemp in Beauty

Hemp seed oil is commonly used in skincare and haircare as it is a great natural alternative to other reaction and irritation causing chemicals. You are also safe in the knowledge that your products are not irresponsibly and unsustainably sourced.

Hemp for Pets

Whether used for grooming or as treats, hemp products for pets have great anecdotal reactions. Hemp is thought to help some animals with anxiety, while working great to relieve irritation and various skin conditions. On top of this they will receive great natural nutritional benefits such as Omega 3,6 & 9, protein and fibre. If you’re unsure if hemp will suit your pet just ask your vet!
